In the 'Melts' series, the traditional application of pigment is abandoned in favor of a process governed by thermal decay and gravity. Brian Milbrand explores the intersection of intent and entropy, using frozen watercolor "cubes" as the sole delivery mechanism for color.
Each study begins with the preparation of cold-pressed paper—a surface heavy enough to withstand the prolonged saturation of melting ice without losing its structural integrity. The artist arranges pigmented ice blocks in calculated topographies, then allows environmental temperature to dictate the final composition over several days.
"The challenge isn't the painting itself, but the preparation. You are designing a chaotic system. You set the stage, you choose the weights and the pigments, and then you step back and let the physics of the melt take over."
